The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, historically, is one of the best college basketball programs in the country. This year, they have “struggled” to a 10-10 overall record, with a 3-6 mark in ACC play.
Although UNC has won its past two games, against Miami and NC State respectively, they are far from where they should be. With a roster that features #2 overall recruit Cole Anthony (out with an injury), five-star center Armando Bacot, and players like Garrison Brooks, Leaky Black, Brandon Robinson, and graduate transfers Christian Keeling and Justin Pierce, the Tar Heels have significantly underperformed.
When Anthony went down with an injury against Ohio State on Dec. 4, things changed for the worse. UNC lost its next three games, including an embarrassing 68-64 loss at home to Wofford. In January, UNC lost to Clemson for the first time ever at home.
Good news: Anthony wants to play. And it looks like he will by the end of the season. This is good news for Tar Heel fans, as UNC will need his production against rivals like Duke and NC State (second time around), in addition to the ACC tournament. While UNC has a chance to contend for an NIT bid, if they go on a magical run to close out the season, they could be saying hello to the NCAA tournament once again.
In the mean time, the Heels will try and win their third straight game, a home contest on Saturday against Boston College.
