In the first inning of Monday’s game in Atlanta, Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jose Musgrove hit Atlanta Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson with a pitch with a runner on third base and two outs. Both Donaldson and Musgrove were ejected from the contest, though neither seemed to do enough to earn their respective ejections.
The altercation began with Donaldson and Musgrove exchanging words after what was seemingly an accidental hit by pitch. Pirates’ catcher Elias Diaz tried to step in between his pitcher and opponent but was thrown off by Donaldson, leading to several players shouting and being held back by teammates. After several minutes of arguing with the umpires, Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle was also tossed from the game.
