A feel good story in Michigan featured a community using sports to rally around a beloved family. Robby Heil has Down syndrome and has been helping as the water boy for the Novi high school football over his four years in the school. His mother Debbie Heil is terminally ill with bone cancer.
The Novi coach worked with the other team to sub Robby in for him to score a touchdown and give the family a special moment.
Debbie said the following about the moment:
“I dropped to the ground because I was so emotional when I saw him make that touchdown. I’ve always been proud of him being the water boy, or as people call him the hydration manager, but this was incredible, he’s Rudy tonight, he’s Rudy.”
The play didn’t count on the scoreboard but it delivered something more meaningful than any record book can ever bring.
