The rich get richer. Per the Athletics’ Shams Charania, championship-winning head coach Tyronn Lue is joining Doc Rivers’ coaching staff in Los Angeles. Lue will be taking on a top assistant role with the Clippers. Other assistant coaches on the Clippers staff include Sam Cassell, Casey Hill, Armond Hill, Rex Kalamian, Brendan O’Connor and John Welch. Between Rivers, Lue and the other six assistants they have over 100 years of coaching experience in the NBA.
Lue was an assistant under Rivers with the Boston Celtics from 2011-2013 and with the Clippers in 2013-2014. Lue would then join the Cleveland Cavaliers in the role of associate head coach for David Blatt in 2014. Eventually, Blatt would be fired, and Lue would take over as the head coach of the Cavaliers from 2016-2018.
From 2011-2014, the Celtics and Clippers had an overall record of 137-92 with three playoff appearances and Eastern Conference Finals appearance. Lue’s time with Cleveland from 2014-2018, the Cavaliers had an overall record of 211-123 with four NBA Finals appearances, winning one of them during the 2015-2016 season.
The Clippers as an organization are loaded from the players to the coaches to the front office and to ownership. From the roster, they boast Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Lou Williams, Patrick Beverley, and Ivica Zubac. Their coaching staff includes Rivers and Lue. Their front office contains the great Jerry West, Michael Winger, Mark Hughes, Trent Redden, and Lee Jenkins. This franchise is all built because of great ownership at the top with Steve Ballmer. Ballmer’s will to win and to get the best talent to create a winning culture is what drives the Clippers.
The Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers rivalry is real now. As both teams look like championship contenders and have multiple ties to each other. West played, coached, and built two dynasties as the general manager for the Lakers and now is a top member of the Clippers front office. Kawhi was highly rumored to be heading to the Lakers before a trade landed the Clippers George. That trade seized the deal for Kawhi to sign with the Clippers. George was even previously rumored to join the Lakers last off-season, instead, he stayed with the Oklahoma Thunder. Then with Lue, it looked like he would be the next head coach of the Lakers. However, the Lakers front office had other plans. They low-balled Lue with a three-year deal and wanted to pair Lue with Jason Kidd as an assistant. Now, Lue will be coaching in Los Angeles, but as an assistant for the Clippers.
