Five hours after hitting a game-winner against the Charlotte Hornets, Tobias Harris finds himself traded for the fifth time in his career.

The 26-year-old is heading to Philadelphia in a six-player trade that sends shockwaves across the NBA. Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the complete trade package.

Per David Aldridge of NBA.com, Harris rejected an $80 million extension last July.  While the Clippers have been a surprise team this year, management has prioritized draft capital and roster flexibility going forward, especially for this upcoming summer where they will look to acquire two max-level free agents.  It’s no surprise they weren’t comfortable with locking up Harris long-term.

The prize of the deal is the 2021 unprotected Miami Heat first-round pick, one of the most coveted draft picks in the league.  With Harris gone, everything is on the table for Los Angeles, including moving pieces like Patrick Beverly and Danilo Gallinari to alleviate more salary cap room for the summer, where they could possibly add two max-level free agents.

As an ancillary benefit, if the Clippers made the playoffs this year their first-round pick would go to Boston.  As a result of this move, Los Angeles will likely bow out of the playoff race and preserve their own draft pick.

For Philly, they’ve now acquired two-players this season in the last year of their contracts, Jimmy Butler and now Harris. The trade gives them a formidable starting five, and a chance to be a real threat in the East Conference come playoff time.
