I have always been a person who ponders the thought of a professional soccer player taking a side job as an NFL kicker. For some teams that are struggling to find consistency from a kicker, most notably the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears, they should look into a soccer player.
How about USWNT star Carli Lloyd? As someone who grew up in Delran, New Jersey, a town only a half-hour from Lincoln Financial Field, Lloyd is a lifelong Eagles fan. As part of the joint practices between the Eagles and Ravens in preparation for tomorrow’s Week Three preseason matchup, Lloyd visited the Eagles’ practice facility. In her time there, Lloyd showed off her leg with Eagles kicker Jake Elliott and Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, kicking 40-yard field goals with ease, and highlighting her day by hitting a 55-yarder.
If you watched the highlight video on SportsCenter this morning (or the number 10 play on SportsCenter Top 10), you saw Lloyd’s field goal. Here is a link to Lloyd clearing the uprights with pure ease. Jake Elliott was very impressed by Lloyd’s display of skill, as he had a look on his face that said “Wow. She is amazing! Maybe we should sign her!” Even crazier? From exactly 55 yards, Elliott is zero-for-one in his career, and Lloyd is one-for-one. Elliott is known for his power leg, however, as he was best remembered for his 61-yard field goal against the Giants during the Eagles’ Super Bowl season.
So maybe the Eagles do not sign Carli Lloyd. They have a good future with Elliott. Lloyd is a soccer player, and will likely end her career that way. But if the Browns and Bears are looking for ideas at kicker, they should give Lloyd a call. She could be a major key to their playoff runs, and with her leg (and accuracy), I would not be surprised to one day see her in an NFL uniform.
