Friday morning, Stephen A Smith dropped a bombshell involving free-agent Kawhi Leonard on ESPN’s Get Up.
WOW, just wow. If true, this report could shift the entire landscape of the quickly approaching NBA free-agency period. If Leonard does, in fact, decide to join a LeBron James & Anthony Davis led Los Angeles team, I don’t know who in this league beats them. A (most likely) Kevin Durant-less Golden State? No chance. An absolutely dysfunctional Houston Rockets team, even with the addition of a Jimmy Butler type player, would be simply overwhelmed on both sides of the ball. The only feasible option to stop this team throughout any point in the next 3-4 years would be Brooklyn if they were able to sign Durant in addition to Kyrie Irving, but even then, would they slow down this three-headed monster?
For months, Lakers fans have heard nothing but bad news from every insider imaginable, yet the team now has the second-best odds to acquire Leonard according to Las Vegas. Just the thought of a potential LeBron-AD-Kawhi “Big 3” sends chills down my spine, and strikes fear in anyone not pulling for the purple and gold.
Now of course Stephen A has been wrong about many things surrounding the NBA, namely a KD-Kyrie dynamic duo in Madison Square Garden, but can you blame him. Nobody truly knows what Kawhi is planning on doing, likely not even Kawhi himself knows where he will be playing next season. But, this is what makes the NBA so much better than any other league. The unpredictability, the speculation; it might be crazy, but that’s what makes it fun.
