Stanford defeated Texas 3-2 in the championship match to claim their ninth national championship, and first since 2007. The championship was theirs from the start, as they claimed the first three matches to clinch the title. Texas would go on to win the last two matches, but at that point they were pointless.
Stanford will lose two seniors this year, so it may take them a few years to get back to contending for a title. While they do have some good young guys returning, they were only the tenth ranked team in the nation. Fortunately for them, they were able to catch fire at the right time to claim the title.
Texas on the other hand, will be a threat for a few years to come. They are only losing one player from this team, and will return three freshman. Texas is a young team, and they did not have the experience, which is one of the biggest keys to the match play portion of the tournament.
Both teams had fantastic seasons, and I’m excited to see how they do next year.
