It’s official. Conor McGregor is boxing Floyd Mayweather on August 26th in Las Vegas. Although the pay-per-view sales for this fight, if it does actually happen, will likely smash those of the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight, it still doesn’t change the fact that Mayweather will move to 50-0 in his career in what could quite possibly be his easiest boxing match in recent years. Conor McGregor may be the biggest name in MMA right now, but that means absolutely nothing in terms of how he would do against Mayweather in a boxing match. Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers to ever put on the gloves. He’s mastered the puzzle of boxing throughout his life. McGregor may be very loud, in your face and even seem fearless at times but that doesn’t change the fact that Mayweather will beat him and beat him easily. Do you really think that McGregor is a better boxer than “Sugar Shane” Mosely, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao? Because all of those fighters lost to Mayweather.
McGregor can sell a fight, no doubt about it. He may be the best salesman the fight game has ever seen. His pre-fight antics are unlike any fighter we’ve ever seen, including Mayweather. We’ve never seen Mayweather knock out his opponent and then jump out of the ring and into the stands so that he can scream in the face of the current champ, Jose Aldo, to let the world know he’s next on his list. Mayweather would rather showboat financially by reminding the world and social media how rich he is. Both methods of self-indulgence are fine and fit their personas.
But if this fight does actually happen on August 26th; it will not be a fair fight. People who say McGregor would beat Mayweather are the same people who think the Alabama Crimson Tide would beat the Cleveland Browns…which would also never happen. Mayweather will score point after point on McGregor and, if he doesn’t knock him out, will win in a landslide unanimous decision. There is a big difference between the 4oz gloves the UFC uses and the 10oz gloves boxing uses. Conor isn’t going to have the power that he normally has. Look, if McGregor fought Mayweather in the octagon with MMA rules then he would literally kill him, but that’s not the situation here and if you can’t realize that then you really don’t know a lot about boxing and MMA.
My prediction? Mayweather knocks him out in the 5th round.
