In a recent interview, Baker Mayfield had some comments on the New York Giants selecting Daniel Jones with the 6th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
“I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones. Blows my mind,” Baker said about the former Duke QB. “Some people overthink it. That’s where they go wrong, they forget you’ve gotta win.” Baker went on to say that his characteristics of a great quarterback are simple. “Either you have a history of winning and being that guy for your team, or you don’t.”
Baker’s comments come from a place that is simple. If you’re not a winner, then you’re not going to thrive in the NFL. Daniel Jones posted a 17-19 record in college and had more negative feedback from the media than positive. But one thing that people are missing is that Baker loves having people against him and I believe right now Baker’s playing chess when everyone else is playing checkers.
Baker Mayfield is an absolute lightning rod when he has people hating him and expecting him to fail. All this did was ramp up the haters and give him more fuel to commit murder to every team in the NFL. I mean, according to the some polls that @CLERodB on Twitter put up, the Browns are going 16-0 (Shoutout my boy @rod-bluhm). Baker is out here to win football games. He’s also the only guy that is willing to go out and market himself to the media while also just telling people he’s an athlete and wants to be as competitive as possible and I could not love that any more. He’s not going to change, he’s made that very clear and frankly I don’t want him to change. I want everyone in the entire world outside of Cleveland to hate Baker Mayfield, just so the wins feel that much better this season.
Now, to address my fellow Cleveland fans who are complaining about this. I’m going to ask you to reflect on our long list of quarterbacks who kept their mouths shut but also sucked it up on the field. Charlie Frye? Brady Quinn? Jake Delhomme? Ring any bells for yuh? Who cares what Baker says, we need to rally behind this mustached maniac and ride him all the way to a Lombardi trophy. I mean, even Freddie Kitchens is backing up our beloved breaker of beer cooler chains…
Baker has been the absolute best thing to happen to this franchise in 20+ years, and if he wins why does any of this matter? This guy has already shown he’s the real deal and continues to prove it every day with his play, leadership, and confidence. My take on the whole situation is simple, the bigger the chip on Baker’s shoulder, the better.
Also, one quick little note, Baker is right! Zero people in the history of people thought that picking Daniel Jones was the best possible choice for the Giants with the 6th pick. Baker just has the unmitigated gull to say what everyone was thinking the entire time and now we’re gonna get mad at the kid? Get out of dodge! Daniel Jones is going to be a dumpster fire. I pity Saquon Barkley who now has to deal with a foo-foo QB for the next few years.
Let’s take a look at some of the unnecessary outrage from this little fiasco.
