Let’s Not Get Tua Excited About Tagovailoa

The 2018 college football season is over and the Alabama Crimson Tide are once again champions, and all everyone can talk about is Tua Tagovailoa.

Let me say this first,  Tagovailoa turned in probably one of the greatest performances in college football history, and congratulations to him.  As I sat in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, next to some Alabama fans, they cried for Tua from the middle of the first quarter and i thought “who?!?” Just last year Jalen Hurts led them to this same stage and was 25-2 as a starter so everyone wondered why the hook in the biggest game of the year. It proved to be the right choice.

Yesterday as i watched TV, comparisons were made between Tua and Russell Wilson, and some splattings of Joe Namath.  Pump the breaks.  We’ve seen this before.  Remember the 2014 National Championship Game when Ohio State trotted out third string QB, Cardale Jones and he powered them to the Championship.  Everyone declared he was a first round pick, but the next year he couldn’t beat out what Ohio State fans have called a back playing quarterback in JT Barrett.

Jones went on to become a fourth round pick of the Bills and is already on his second team with the Los Angeles Chargers.  Not saying Tua will have the same result but if you think Hurts will go quietly in the night during the spring or that Nick Saban doesn’t have another 5-star prospect coming in you are delusional.

Tua still has at least two more seasons left and at Alabama where it’s championship or bust, any mistake he makes will be scrutinized.  See Jalen Hurts.  In an age where everyone is crowned the next best thing or the GOAT let’s see what happens over the next few years.

Im not a Bama hater, and the future looks bright, but let’s not get overly excited.
