Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving blew up this Summer’s NBA free agency period when the both decided to change teams and join forces in Brooklyn. Just when it seemed like everything in the NBA was beginning to settle down, Kevin Durant announced he is changing his number.
For his entire career Kevin Durant has worn the number 35, but when he returns from his Achilles rupture he will do so wearing the number 7. While there has been some speculation around the NBA and its media about why he may have chosen number 7, Durant released a statement through Twitter regarding his thought process behind the number change.
“35 was chosen in honor of someone very near and dear to me,” Durant wrote. “I will always honor him and the number 35. But as I start this new chapter in my basketball life, the number I’ll be wearing on my back is the Number 7 next time you see me on the floor.”
I like this move, but don’t expect Durant-7 to be anything close to Kobe-24; it’s just a publicity thing. However, this also brought up a lot of questions to whether Kyrie will be switching number, and the answer to that is no. Kyrie will be sticking with the number 11. I expect both of these to be in the top 10 in jersey sales because to be completely honest, they’re kind of awesome.
