I’ve stood by idly, trying not to completely destroy the internet or burn my Twitter timeline to the ground with my New York Knicks hatred.
This offseason has been particularly miserable. The Knicks missed out on Zion, lost out on the KD, Kyrie, and Kawhi sweepstakes, and to make matters worse they signed like five power fowards. I’m stuck with this bottom barrel franchise.
But, it dawned on me this morning, I’m not actually stuck with them. Now I know this sounds like a crazy idea but my fellow Knicks fans just hear me out. We have options. We don’t need to watch the Knicks or even be Knicks fans.
Why? There is competition in town and it’s a better product. Hop aboard the Brooklyn Nets bandwagon.
Jumping to the Nets is actually a realistic option. The Nets have sucked for so long. The last time the Nets won a chip was in a league that doesn’t exist anymore, the American Basketball Association (ABA).
For anyone who is unaware of what the ABA is, watch the Will Ferrell documentary “Semi-Pro,” it is a great educational movie.
Now let me get back to my point. The Nets are essentially a new basketball team. Yes, the Nets have been around since the 1970s but this is a new look Nets; who in my mind have no ties to Dr.J, Jason Kidd, or Vinsanity. This version of the Nets has gone through a facelift.
They went from the dumps of Jersey to the high life hipster bureau of Brooklyn. They traded the red, white and blue for black, white and Coogi patterns.
If all the Knicks fans stop going to the Garden and start going to the Barclay’s Center the Knicks will be in hot water. Best case scenario if this happens: the NBA will have to essentially make James Dolan sell the team.
People are going to complain about how I’m not a loyal fan, I actually would argue I’m a very loyal fan. I’ve been dying on a cross for this franchise since 1993, the year of my birth. I was baptized in Knicks orange and blue. But I will not continue the insanity of thinking that the Knicks will get it together, cause they won’t. No matter what regime comes in (and signs 10 power forwards and 15 point guards) it won’t matter because Dolan is still in charge. As long as his signature is on the checks free agents won’t come.
Why? Because if you’re a Knick great and are considered the heart and soul of a team and a legend, chances are Dolan will throw you out of a game after you retire; or maybe during your playing days who knows cause he is that much of an egomaniac.
Dolan is a billionaire, who has arguments with petty fans, like me, and threatens to have them kicked out of the Garden for life. He shouldn’t care about the opinions of normal people.
Dolan is the problem and as long as he’s in control, we as Knicks fans are held captive. But we don’t have to be, we can be fan-free agents and shop our fandom to other teams, like the Nets. We can tell Dolan to go shove it, as KD and Kyrie did. Knicks fans can, and should, hop on a train and travel to the Barclays Center and buy tickets to see the new show in town.
It’s simple: hurt Dolan’s pocket and pray the league puts pressure on him to sell the team.
P.S. Want to know why I think James Dolan is egotistical? In 2014 Dolan booked himself to open for the Eagles at MSG. Let that sink in, Dolan’s band JD & The Straight Shot, who barely had a catalog of songs, opened for a Hall of Fame band because Dolan said so.
