In breaking news earlier this morning, Jay Gruden was fired from his position as head coach of the Washington Redskins. In a season that started with the Redskins drafting their quarterback of the future in Dwayne Haskins, running back Derrius Guice returning from a torn ACL, and Paul Richardson come over from the Seattle Seahawks.
Gruden was never able to get his team going, as the Redskins’ season started by blowing a 20-0 lead to the Philadelphia Eagles and continued with a 31-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at home, an embarrassing 31-15 loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football, a 24-3 drubbing at the face of the Daniel Jones-led New York Giants, and yesterday, a 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots that saw the Redskins go up 7-0 early.
Redskins and football fans as a whole saw this firing coming for some time, as during his tenure as head coach, the Redskins made the playoffs only once (that game was a loss), and they never played up to the expectations of a team with several playmakers.
To make matters worse for Gruden, it was rumored that he did not want the Redskins to draft Haskins. In the offseason, the Redskins traded for Case Keenum to be their starting quarterback and, well, that has not been working out too kindly. Haskins came in to relieve Keenum against the Cowboys, and fans wanted to see him earlier (in previous weeks).
Off the field, Gruden was also recorded on video, hitting on girls well below his age. Put this in perspective: Gruden is 52 years old. Why else is this wrong? Gruden is also married.
The Gruden era is done in Washington, and I am sure that Redskins fans are happy to see that. Hopefully their next coach will be able to turn around a franchise that saw a lot of success in the last century.
