AROUND THE NFL

Head Coach Hires & Grades

There has been big news across the NFL, as several head coaching hires have been made:

Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur

Arizona Cardinals: Kliff Kinsgbury

…what? This hire makes zero sense to me. I am at a loss for words on this one. I cannot for the life of me understand how a man who was fired for not winning enough (35-40) in college, can turn around and find himself a head coaching job in the NFL. Their logic is that Kingsbury has developed a few quarterbacks in college, primarily Patrick Mahomes and Davis Webb (some are giving him credit for Mayfield, but certainly not this writer). But, this hiring exhibits a special type of ineptitude. The idea that this guy can bring the best out of Rosen and win football games is a laughable fantasy.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Bruce Arians

This was a brilliant hire for the Bucs. They have not had a legitimate NFL head coach since Jon Gruden, and this was the right man for the job. This is Jameis Winston’s last chance to prove his worth as the number one overall pick, and Bruce Arians is the right man to get that type of performance out of him. There are some questions about his age (66), but the NFL is a win-now league, and Arians was the right choice for that type of approach.

Cleveland Browns: Freddie Kitchens

Grade: A

Denver Broncos: Vic Fangio

Fangio, 60, is an NFL coaching veteran with over 35 years of experience. The former Bears defensive coordinator ran a defense that gave up a league leading 17.7 points per game. Now, he  has been given the keys to one of the most talented defenses in the NFL. He will bring an aggressive scheme that will allow his players to make plays. On the offensive side, there is rumor that he is going to bring on former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak as the offensive coordinator. The Broncos have rebounded nicely, following that head-scratching Vance Joseph hire.

Grade: B

The Bengals, Jets, and Dolphins are the teams remaining to make decisions.
