If you are an FC Barcelona fan, the offseason just keeps getting better and better for you.
Adding to a roster that already includes Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Ivan Rakitic, Coutinho, Luis Suarez, and Lionel Messi, Barca made a huge move on Friday, July 12, adding Atlético Madrid star forward Antoine Griezmann.
Barcelona has a ton of star power. So why did they go out and get Griezmann?
If you do not follow soccer, let me give you a little bit of history on FC Barcelona. They are one of the premier soccer clubs in the world, and they are also one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world. Since their inception in 1899, Barca has won 26 La Liga titles, second to only Réal Madrid (33).
In addition to their La Liga titles, Barca has also won a record 30 Copa Del Rey titles, a record 13 Supercopa de España titles, and the Champions League five time.
Griezmann joins an FC Barcelona squad coming off another successful season, one that saw Barca finish first in La Liga, the top level of soccer competition in Spain. Lionel Messi, as he is so great at doing, led Barca in goals with 36. Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez was the next closest goal scorer with 21. The next closest goal scorer? French midfielder Ousmane Dembélé, who recorded eight.
Griezmann should provide Barca with another top goal-scoring threat, as he recorded 15 goals with Atlético Madrid last year. He could help form a “Triple Threat” on the attack, along with Messi and Suarez.
Griezmann is not officially in Barcelona yet, but he is supposed to over the weekend. Once Griezmann officially dons his Barca uniform and starts play with his new club, will Barcelona be this year’s La Liga favorites?
If you want to follow along with Barca as their upcoming season starts, you can do so as early as Tuesday, July 23, as they take on Premier League power Chelsea at 6:30 A.M. Eastern Time.
