Did The Indians Perfect the “Moneyball” Technique?

While fans called the Dolan’s cheap, they have proved to still know exactly what they’re doing. Just look at the production from players acquired in the offseason.

Something has to be said about the job the Dolan’s have done with the Indians this season. The “Moneyball” approach has been attempted by many and perfected by few. Even though the Dolan’s are known as “cheap owners,” I think they know what they’re doing.

The Indians went from being lost and afraid to being destined to be special for the considerable future. All of the moves made during the offseason, which many fans were displeased about, have turned out to be the best thing for the franchise.

The trade that sent Carlos Santana back to Cleveland was a shock. Most fans didn’t expect him to return. When the Indians lost Yonder Alonzo in a trade to the White Sox, they needed help at first base. This move proved to be the best made by the Indians thus far.

Alonzo played 67 games for the Chicago White Sox this season, batting a dreadful .178, with only seven home runs and 27 RBI’s. He is currently with the Rockies on a minor league contract. Meanwhile, Carlos Santana made the all star team. He has batted .297 with a team leading 19 home runs and 52 RBI’s. As part of the three-team deal between the Indians, Rays and the Mariners, which included Carlos Santana, the Tribe also received another key player: Jake Bauers. The Indians gave up Edwin Encarnacion and Yandy Diaz for Bauers.

He’s hitting .245 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI’s. Even though Encarnacion has 25 home runs this year, he’s averaged around the same batting average as Bauers.. The power hitting has been taken over by other players, such as the next guy on the list, Roberto Perez.

Perez is currently batting .256 with 16 home runs and 36 RBI’s in 63 games so far this season. The level of production the Indians are getting from Perez is more than anyone thought he could deliver.

The team has been rolling and it’s all thanks to what the Dolans created. It didn’t happen overnight and the Indians went through a rough patch to start the season. Now, this team is poised to make another playoff run with a young, hungry core, led by Mr. Smile himself, Francisco Lindor.
