This is the 16th installment of a series of articles covering each player on the Cleveland Browns roster. There will be a new player released every day from now until the Browns preseason begins. If you enjoy (tolerate) this article, I encourage you to check back each day to read each one. I try to keep these articles short and sweet.
#49- JT Hassell– S- Florida Tech
I call this guy JT Hustle because he works so hard on the field. JT was born with only 2 fingers on his left hand, but he’s never let that hold him back. I honestly think it is going to be a hassle for any wide receiver to get past this guy. One other thing that stood out to me about JT is the fact that he attended Florida Tech. This seems like an oxymoron to me seeing how half of Florida doesn’t have WiFi yet. That’s like going to a school called Pittsburgh Dental, it makes no sense.
It’s always hard to judge a player’s college stats, especially when they played at a small school like Hassell did. With that being said, he made 124 tackles as a senior. And added 3 forced fumbles, 4.5 sacks, and 9.5 tackles for a loss. This absurd stat line led to him being voted the conference Defensive Player of the Year last season.
The Browns defensive backfield has gone from a relative weakness to a strength in a matter of two offseasons. At the safety position, John Dorsey has made trades to bring in Damarious Randall and Eric Murray, then drafted Sheldrick Redwine and signed Morgan Burnett and Jermaine Whitehead this summer. That is a lot of competition for Hassell to overcome, but if anyone knows how to overcome long odds, it is JT Hassell.
