This is the 29th installment of a series of articles covering each player on the Cleveland Browns roster. There will be a new player released every day from now until the Browns preseason begins. If you enjoy (tolerate) this article, I encourage you to check back each day to read each one. I try to keep these articles short and sweet.
#7- Jamie Gillan– P- Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Most of my daily breakdowns have featured an attempt to create a nickname for each Browns player, but Gillan needs no assistance from me in that department. You probably know this guy as “The Scottish Hammer”, which very well could be the coolest stage name in sports right now. The nickname is well deserved because when I watched him punt the ball, he absolutely kilts it.
Jamie Gillan was first team all-conference as a kicker and punter at Arkansas Pine-Bluff. He even made a 52-yard field goal as a junior. Not bad for a punter. As a senior, Gillan had 19 punts go over 50 yards, including a career-long, 80 yarder.
Gillan will be competing with the incumbent starter, Britton Colquitt. I am sure there is a soccer joke somewhere regarding Britton and the Scottish competing in a kicking game but I am too lazy to try to workshop it right now. Heck, if the Browns brought in a third competitor named Wales Ireland, we could have a full on United Kingdom of punters.
