This is the 77th installment of a series of articles covering each player on the Cleveland Browns roster. If you enjoy (tolerate) this article, I encourage you to check back each day to read each one.
#85- David Njoku– TE- Miami
When I first
heard that the Browns drafted the Miami tight end, my nerd brain instantly
thought of Goku from Dragon Ball Z. I didn’t even really watch that show, but I
knew enough to know Goku was awesome and so is David Njoku. He has had a decent
first couple of seasons with Cleveland, but this year I am expecting him to go
full on supersaiyan.
Njoku’s
production improved greatly from year one to his sophomore season. He had 32
catches for 386 yards as a rookie and upped those numbers to 56 receptions for
639 yards in 2018. The former Miami Hurricane’s game play instantly got better
once Baker Mayfield was put in the starting quarterback position. Njoku had
over 50 yards receiving in eight of the 13 games that Mayfield started.
The Browns
offense as a whole has a ton of threats, especially after the additions of
Odell Beckham, Jr. and Kareem Hunt. Those new weapons, coupled with another
year of seasoning for Mayfield should lead to an explosive offense this year. With
so much focus on the receivers and running backs Njoku could be the biggest
beneficiary. Year three is typically the time that tight ends have their coming
out season, so it’s reasonable to believe that Njoku could have a monster
season with the Browns this year.
