One of the biggest storylines of this offseason has been the announcement of Andrew Luck’s retirement. Finally, the season is starting and it will be the first game for the Indianapolis Colts without Luck on the roster. Even though new starter, Jacoby Brissett, has started for the Colts for 16 games, there are still a lot of questions around him and the team. Week One is the first chance to see if any of the questions will be answered.
The Colts start off their season against the Los Angeles Chargers. Both teams coming off playoff seasons and both teams were the AFC Wild Card teams. However, they are each missing one of their best players with the Colts missing Luck and the Chargers missing Running Back Melvin Gordon due to his giant holdout. It’s a rough first matchup for Brissett, going against one of the best defenses in the league. Hopefully, we can get a good idea of what this season will be like for the Colts even though they have such a big matchup.
Chargers: LT Russel Okung (blood clots), S Derwin James (broken foot), RB Melvin Gordon (holdout), PK Marvin Badgley (groin, doubtful)
Colts: DE Jabaal Sheard (knee), RB Jordan Wilkins (ankle)
Game is at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Ca. The game starts at 4:05 P.M. and is aired on CBS. The Chargers are 6.5 point favorites with an Over/Under of 44.5 points.
With it being the first game without Luck, and the Chargers being a solid team again this year, I’m going to have to go with the Chargers to win. I think it will be closer than expected, so I say to take the Colts to cover. My score prediction is Chargers 28, Colts 24.
