This is the third installment of a series of articles covering each player on the Cleveland Browns roster. There will be a new player released every day from now until the Browns preseason begins. If you enjoy (tolerate) this article, I encourage you to check back each day to read each one. I promise to keep them short and sweet. I actually call these articles “Jim O’Neil’s Defenses” because they are so easy to read.
#83- DJ Montgomery– WR- Austin Peay
DJ Montgomery sounds like a guy your cousin finds on Craigslist to play music at their wedding in Alabama. One interesting fact about him is that he attended the small college of Austin Peay. All I know about that school is that they have a hilarious chant of “Let’s Go Peay,” which made me chuckle that one time that their basketball team made the NCAA Tournament.
Montgomery began his collegiate career at Holmes Community College where he recorded a staggering 991 yards on only 36 catches. That averages out to 27.5 yards per catch. During his senior season at Austin Peay, he put up 797 yards receiving and had 10 touchdowns. He also recorded a 4.3 40 time at his pro day.
Much like all of the other incoming wide receivers this season, there isn’t a ton of room on the roster for DJ. The top 4 wideouts on the depth chart are pretty much set in stone. And Cleveland has Damion Ratley and Derrick Willies returning, as well as newcomer Jaelen Strong, who probably all have a leg up on the undrafted rookie. Competition is a great thing though so hopefully it brings out the best in all of these young skill position players.
