The last time the Dallas Wings got a win, was all the back on August 17, 2018, against the Las Vegas Aces. Since then, they have had seven straight losses, five coming in this season. This ties the worst five game start in franchise history, the first coming in the 2014 season.
In the 2019 season, some of their games have been close. Some have not. They lost three games by four points or less, gotten blown out by 15 points by the Indiana Fever and lost badly to the Washington Mystics by 24 points.
Getting a win will not get easier either, after a series of injuries to guards Tayler Hill, Moriah Jefferson and Arike Ogunbowale. All-star guard Skylar Diggins-Smith is still on maternity leave. It also does not help that forward Moriah Jefferson will be leaving to play in Europe.
Dallas has brought in center Megan Gustafson to help change the tide and not start off with six straight losses.
Wings President & CEO Greg Bibb stated this in a team news release, “We are currently dealing with a series of roster challenges and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to sign a player of Megan’s character and ability”.
Gustafson was recently on the Dallas squad being the seventeenth pick in the 2019 WNBA draft but was let go before the regular season got underway.
Gustafson stated this on re-signing with Dallas in the team news release, “I have learned that nothing in this life is guaranteed, but I will take full advantage of this second opportunity with the Dallas Wings whether it is for one day, one week, or 10 years”.
Her second opportunity and WNBA debut will be on June 15, 2019, when the Wings take on the Atlanta Dream. The Dream currently sit on a 1-4 record and coming in with a four-game losing streak.
This is the Wings best chance to get a win, as the Dream lose by an average of 13 points a game. The next three games after that for the Wings will be against Phoenix Mercury, Las Vegas Aces and the Connecticut Sun.
The Mercury look to rebound after two straight losses. The Aces are favored to win the championship boosting 5-2 odds via Westgate LV SuperBook and Connecticut owns a 7-1 record. Which is the best in the WNBA right now.
Atlanta’s only win did come against Dallas on the first game of the season by four points. However, Dallas did lead 55-47 after three quarters. The Wings went cold shooting 6-19 equaling a field goal percentage of 31.6% in the fourth quarter. While the Dream became hot, shooting a field goal percentage of 64.3% on 9-14 shooting. Combining for twenty points in the fourth quarter adding seven more points off free throws.
Atlanta’s 27 points in the fourth quarter to Dallas’s seventeen, won the Dream the game 76-72. The Wings look to come in and show that they are the better team and that the first game was just a shooting fluke and also get their season back on track.
