The Minnesota Twins have added some bullpen help prior to the deadline as they have acquired Sergio Romo from the Miami Marlins. Minnesota will also receive minor league pitcher Chris Vallimont and a player to be named later according to MLB Network.
Lewin Diaz was the Twins 30th ranked prospect in their farm system according to MLB.com The 22-year-old first baseman is hitting .297 in the minors this year with 19 home runs and 61 runs batted in between High-A and Double-A.
Romo is 2-0 with 17 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 38 appearances with the Marlins this season.
Over his twelve-year career with the Giants, Dodgers, Rays, and Marlins, Romo has compiled a 40-31 record with 126 saves and a 2.91 ERA in 681 appearances.
Prior to Saturday’s slate of games across baseball, Minnesota had the 14th ranked bullpen in terms of ERA (4.41) and twelve blown saves. Their AL Central Division lead has shrunk from eleven games to just two with the Cleveland Indians surging.
Romo has postseason experience as he was part of three World Series championships with the San Francisco Giants. He was also very friendly in terms of salary having signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million last offseason.
The Twins aren’t done making deals either as they are also looking for some starting pitching help with the trade deadline coming up on Wednesday.
