As expected, the New Orleans Pelicans have the new face of their franchise. With the top overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, they selected Duke University superstar Zion Williamson.
Since early last season, Williamson was the consensus top prospect and might be the most hyped NBA rookie since LeBron James. He lit up the basketball world with seemingly-impossible athleticism and highlight reel dunks.
He averaged 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting at a ridiculous 68 percent clip from the field last season. His freakish physical makeup also made him a force on defense, as he racked up 2.1 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. The 18-year-old was obviously in a class of his own in the NCAA; built more like an NFL linebacker, the 6-foot-7-inch, 285-pound superstar dominated anyone in his path at the collegiate level.
Williamson will join a whole cast of new Pelicans this season as the team’s roster is full of young stars. After the recent trade of Anthony Davis, he’ll suit up alongside former Los Angeles Lakers draft picks Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart. On top of that, New Orleans also owns two more picks in Thursday’s draft, eighth and 17th-overall. Bright days seems to be on the horizon for this new and exciting Pelicans squad.
