Ladies and Gents! I have waited for this moment this entire season! The young stud got the call up last night and tonight he will make his Major League debut against the Chicago White Sox! What a moment that must be for the youngster! The only unfortunate part of this story is the fact that it came with Tyler Naquin being placed on the injured list due to tightness in his left calf. People can think all they want about Tyler Naquin but he has been a very productive bat for the Indians so far this season. But now it’s time for Mercado to shine and I could not be more jazzed up about this, I’m like a kid on Christmas morning!
For those who don’t remember, Mercado turned some heads in the Indians clubhouse this past Spring Training to the point where they almost had him break camp with them and join the club early on. Ultimately, it was decided by Tito that the youngster stay in AAA Columbus and get as many at-bats as possible before they make him a utility outfielder.
“His balance at the plate right now is unbelievable… He deserves all of the credit, he’s a terrific worker.” Tito said in an interview back in March at the end of Spring Training, and boy is he right. In his 30 games down in Columbus, Mercado had a stat line of .294 BA with 10 doubles, four home runs, 15 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases. That’s quite impressive indeed, seeing that he’s 24 years old and has nothing but upside. Some people don’t care too much, but it always amazes me that some of these guys are 25 years old or younger and do some remarkable things on the diamond.
Anyway, here’s to a long and very successful career for Oscar Mercado with the Cleveland Indians (or for however long we can afford him). The Tribe takes on the Chicago White Sox today at 2:10 p.m. in Chicago. Turn on your boob-tube and root the rookie on!
