Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow this weekend in effort to remove loose bodies in the joint. The former American League Cy Young pitcher will reportedly miss at least four weeks and is expected to fully join the club again in September. This injury puts Snell on the DL for the second time this season, the first being a toe injury back in April.
After Snell’s Cy Young season last year, the Rays signed him to a five-year, $50 million deal that Snell ultimately found disappointing. Snell’s season this year has been somewhat disappointing, posting a 6-7 record with a 4.28 ERA. Only time will tell how the Rays handle this situation. Whether they bring someone up from their farm system or go after someone before the Trade Deadline is still up in the air at this point. Snell however, is confident he can come back strong from this surgery and felt that this injury could be the reason for his season stats.
One thing we know for sure is that losing Snell is a tough pill to swallow for a Rays team who is fighting for a Wild Card spot this year. Currently, they sit one game behind the A’s for the Wild Card.
