Sunday night, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker was pronounced dead at the scene of an automobile accident. According to The Virginian-Pilot, Whitaker was struck by a car while crossing the road in Virginia Beach.

The article states that the driver remained on the scene after the horrible accident, and a quote from his son, Devon Whitaker revealed his father was wearing all black, probably making it hard to be seen.

Whitaker, 55, made quite the footprint on the boxing world. He had taken the title in four different weight classes and in 1994 he won a gold medal in the Olympics. After retiring in 2001, he did a little training and then would drop by the gym in Virginia and speak to kids from time to time.

His son said he was a “cool guy.”

Our family here at BIGPLAY, send our love to the Whitaker family during this difficult time.
