Strengths:

  • Smart kid, main language is Japanese but learned the English language quickly
  • Very solid frame- 6’8″ and 235 lbs
  • 7’2″ Wingspan
  • One of the most underrated athletes in this class
  • Runs the floor looking to score
  • Does a great job at finishing alley-oops
  • Can finish through, around and over defenders
  • Capable jump shot shooter but didn’t really shoot many in college
  • Fairly effective with his back to the basket
  • Good Rebounder
  • Solid defender, doesn’t let his size hold him back
  • Can get up and block shots
  • Hasn’t played basketball very long and never developed bad mechanics as his jump shot has very few flaws.
  • Great physical capabilities.

Weaknesses:

  • Still a very raw prospect
  • Not very good passing abilities
  • Needs to continue to improve his ball handling
  • Needs to shoot more outside the paint. Only 7% of his shots came from three
  • Doesn’t really have a position. Too big to play small forward, too small for a traditional power forward

Rui Hachimura could quietly sneak up some draft boards in the weeks to come. He’s freakishly athletic and has natural scoring tendencies. He isn’t very aggressive on the offensive end but that’s easier to fix than being a ball hog. Hachimura won’t be the best player on your team, but let him develop for a few years, and he could be a star.
