What to Know?

  • #1 Seed: Gonzaga
  • Sleeper: Syracuse
  • Over seeded: Gonzaga

Gonzaga is a very talented team. The only problem is they don’t play anyone. The Bulldogs went 4-3 in quadrant one games, with a huge season defining win against Duke. Gonzaga has been lead by Rui Hachimura this season, who is a Wooden Award Finalist. He controls the paint for the Zags, and distributes to his guards very well too. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs are in a brutal seeding. Having to face Baylor, Syracuse, Florida State or Marquette early on is no easy task. These teams rely on the three ball and can make it at a very high rate.

This will be problematic for Gonzaga.

Also, Syracuse can cause a lot of problems. The Orange run their classic 2-3 zone and I don’t think teams will be ready. Another great thing going for the Orange is that they’re led by veteran stars. Tyus Battle, Frank Howard and Paschal Chukwu have all been to the dance before, and can lead this Syracuse team that has “under performed” most of the season. Finally, any team coached by Jim Boeheim is going to have a shot at the Final Four.

First Round Predictions:

#1 Gonzaga: 84 vs #16 FDU: 55

#8 Syracuse: 67 vs #9 Baylor: 58

#5 Marquette: 81 vs #12 Murray State: 74

#4 Florida State: 77 vs #13 Vermont: 71

#6 Buffalo: 83 vs #11 St. John’s: 69

#3 Texas Tech: 75 vs #14 Northern Kentucky: 61

#7 Nevada: 67 vs #10 Florida: 66

#2 Michigan: 80 vs # 15 Montana: 54
